At the pick and pull, here is a great condition Volvo 740 wagon GLE. GLE trim means it has the rarer 16v engine and overall it was a great looking car. Had brand new tires and good paint. Guy said it was being junked because it was “old”

Sorry boss, they aren’t. They have worse crash ratings, they generally have worse mpg, they have lower hp, on a whole less reliable and generally inferior to the subsequent generation that followed them.

I get it isn’t a popular opinion, but can we be honest and take of our rose colored nostalgia glasses for just a few minutes.

Wow those are all very good points. I guess if I was solely buying a car based on crash ratings, fuel economy numbers and reliability ratings I’d buy a 2015 car. But as an enthusiast, I desire something beyond the rational and practical for my car.

I want something with soul, brio, and character. Something that’s cool, unassisted, primal, and something that can’t be bought on a showroom floor by any random dude with $10k for a down payment.

Yeah, not everyone can maintain them, or put up with their old-world driving dynamics but that’s why I like them. When I see a guy/girl in a ~50 year old car I know they’re one of us. The ones who love driving more than saving money at the pump or being safe in a crash. Old cars rule.

Exactly. But I couldn’t disagree with you more. Imho we need fewer new cars and appreciate the older ones more. Our throwaway society is wrong from both a moral and a sustainability point of view. And that’s ignoring the ‘fact’ that older cars are generally more fun .

you have a good point, but do you mind looking from my perspective.

I am a 23 year old student on a limited budget, I can rarely afford a mechanic and don’t even think about a car payment. I live on my own I pay rent and taxes and a full time student.

Unfortunately cars are my life and as a young adult I have to get around. I drive a 23 year old car because it was $600, it’s fully loaded and in the past year it has started up every morning. Is it a piece of shit compared to a new car, yes, but my insurance is $60 a month, it’s paid off so I don’t have to worry about the bank coming after it, and it’s a car that’s simply within my means.

Now lets look at your reliability statement vs my own car, a 1993 Crown Victoria. I have had no major issues outside of normal maintenance after I fixed the oil leak and a blown coolant hose. overall I’ve spent less than $2k since I’ve bought it and it’s been more reliable than my friends 2001 Neon or even my other friends 2003 Mercedes S class. Yes all older cars, but close to a decade newer than mine.

I love older cars because they’re just awesome pieces of shit and nostalgia has nothing to it.

I can understand driving a cheap beater car because that is what a set of finances dictate. And generalities are just that, there will also be a subset that proves the rule and a subset that break the rule.

I would argue that the majority of people love older cars because of irrational love/nostalgia. They seem to forget flooding a carb and having to wait when they are late for work. Or having serious rust issues after 3 years.

Perhaps they don’t have the multiple airbags but and old Volvo, SAAB, Benz or BMW is built like a tank. Audis are pretty good too. These cars were designed by engineers that understood that every part of a car works for you or against you in a crash.

Performance? There always have been performance cars.

Reliability? That’s what maintenance is for.

Inferior? Hardly, and with more style and individuality that the beige-mobiles, Mom-UVs and econo-shitboxes they make now. The only nice cars now are the expensive models not everyone can afford.

Yes, because new cars with their black box recorders, ecus everywhere, airbag lights only a stealership can read, multiplex systems no one can repair, and leave you stranded check engine lights are so much better.
